Amber Teething Necklace: Helpful or Hype?
What is an amber teething necklace?
Amber teething necklaces are infant or toddler sized necklaces with small beads or chips of Baltic Amber strung on them. They are most often knotted between each bead, to prevent the whole strand from unraveling if the string should become compromised. The magic, my friend, lies within each little bead of Baltic Amber.
One of the most common misconceptions about amber teething necklaces is that they are necklaces that the baby chews on to help relieve teething pain. This is just not true. There are lots of really great natural teething toys and nursing necklaces out there that provide gum stimulation and pain relief by being chewed on, like these from The Beaded Bond (←shameless plug for my etsy shop), but amber teething necklaces are not made to be chewed on.
If the baby doesn’t chew on them, then how do they work?
Remember how I said that those little beads were magical? Each bead is made of fossilized resin, called amber, from trees in the Baltic region (the countries surrounding the Baltic Sea). This “Baltic gold” dates back as old as 44 million years by some accounts!
The magic within the beads is its concentration of up to 8% succinic acid. Succinic acid acts as a natural anti inflammatory, and can be found in arthritis creams, vitamin supplements, and even cardiac medicines.
As the amber necklace is warmed by the baby’s body heat, a small amount of this natural healer is absorbed through the skin, aiding in pain relief associated with teething. It does so without leaving any residue or risk of side effects. Succinic acid is considered safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), because it “occurs widely as a natural constituent of the plants and animals which are commonly used for human food.”
Given amber’s natural healing properties, many people swear by it’s helpfulness for an array of ailments, like migraines, arthritis, and even as a fatigue buster!
How do I pick the right amber teething necklace?
When you’re looking to buy an amber teething necklace, there are a few things to consider.
First of all, like many things today, there are a lot of “fakes” out there. People try to pass off simple plastic beads as amber, so buyer beware. There are a few things to look out for when determining if the necklace you are looking to purchase is genuine:
- Look at the price. Most genuine Baltic Amber teething necklaces cost between $15-$25. If it is priced too good to be true, it probably is.
- Read reviews. Only buy from a shop/ website/ seller who has many good reviews, from people who have actually purchased their product.
- Once purchased, test it! You can test your new necklace to confirm that it is indeed amber a few different ways:
- Dissolve 1 part salt into 4 parts water in a medium drinking glass, and place the necklace in the water. Genuine amber should float on top, while fake or plastic beads will quickly sink. Keep in mind that if your jewelry has any added metal clasps or beads, this may cause even a real amber necklace to sink.
- Visually inspect it. Genuine Baltic Amber is a natural resin, so you should expect to see imperfections, such as tiny cracks, specks or bubbles within the beads.
- Place the necklace in a cloth and vigorously rub it between your hands for 30-60 seconds. Quickly unwrap the necklace and hold a strand of hair near it. Genuine amber should produce static electricity using this method. If it is real, you should expect to see the hair drawn towards the beads, similar to how it would be drawn to a statically charged balloon.
Aside from making sure the amber is authentic, you will also want to pick the right color and finish of amber. Amber teething necklaces come in a variety of colors, as well as either a raw or polished finish.
There is a lot of information that states that the lighter the color, the higher concentration of succinic acid, therefor the better it will work. It is also thought that the raw beads provide a higher concentration than the polished ones. From my research, these statements have not been proven, and are more-so anecdotal. Nonetheless, I went for the lighter, unpolished colors just in case. Choose the color and finish that suits your tastes and appeals to you.
You can see my littlest guy, Brayden, wearing his amber teething necklace in my post, How to Pick the Best Vacuum & Review.
It is very important to get the proper size amber teething necklace for your baby or toddler. The necklace should be loose enough that it will not cause discomfort around the baby’s neck. Be careful though, that it is not too loose. A necklace that is too loose is easier for the baby to put into their mouth, or get caught or tangled more easily. Measure your baby’s neck if you are unsure what size to get. The necklace should sit right about at the collar line of their shirt or onesie.
Where can I buy a quality amber teething necklace?
Once you know what size and color amber teething necklace you would like, you are ready to shop! There are 2 different routes you can take when purchasing your baby’s amber teething necklace, handmade or store bought. If you are looking for an especially beautiful piece, or one that you might even be able to design the colors and pattern of beads yourself, then handmade is the way to go. If you are looking for the quickest and most cost effective option, then a store bought necklace is often times your best bet.
